The Flag at Dawn

A Daily Ceremony
Ordered display
The dormitory raises the Rising Sun flag at six each morning, accompanied by the national anthem. The ritual makes the institution’s politics visible in ordinary life.
Watanabe’s distance
He observes the ceremony with curiosity rather than conviction. Its regularity becomes part of the strange environment he inhabits without fully belonging to it.
Storm Trooper’s Routine

A Roommate’s Unyielding Habit
The morning exercises
Storm Trooper performs radio calisthenics, including noisy jumps, while Watanabe is trying to sleep. He cannot omit part of the routine because he has practiced it for years.
Comic accommodation
Watanabe gives up trying to change him. The episode introduces a dormitory culture in which eccentric habits become unavoidable features of shared life.
The Amsterdam Photograph

A Harmless Roommate Conflict
A negotiated room
Storm Trooper removes Watanabe’s nude poster and replaces it with a canal photograph. Watanabe accepts the change without much resistance.
An accidental joke
Other students mock the image and invent new pictures to unsettle Storm Trooper. Watanabe joins the joke, then recognizes that the roommate’s earnestness makes the teasing unkind.
The Firefly on the Roof

A Small Light Released
A gift from Storm Trooper
Storm Trooper gives Watanabe a firefly in a jar before leaving the dormitory. Watanabe releases it on the roof and watches it fly away.
Memory without a place
The insect’s faint trail evokes a stronger, half-forgotten memory of fireflies. Its departure echoes Watanabe’s difficulty holding on to people and moments as they recede.
The Empty Room

A Quiet Departure
Storm Trooper is gone
Watanabe returns to find his roommate’s belongings removed and learns that he has left the dormitory. No explanation is offered.
A changed room
Watanabe replaces the roommate’s poster and enjoys living alone, while continuing to think of him occasionally. The disappearance ends a comic routine without giving it a neat conclusion.
